Resident Evil 4 (2023)

Couldn’t help myself, after watching the trailer I wasn’t too excited about the remake and equally had only just played the original game. However, just had to pick this one up given how much I enjoyed playing the original version and a lack of games in this sort of category.

The remakes of the second and third game left me with such high expectations for this one, this being said after playing the original I couldn’t really wrap my head around how they could improve or why they’d even want to remake it. The trailer had a certain amount of comedy in it that gave me concerns that where the original got it’s comedic value unintentionally the remake was trying to force it the way so many newer games do. However this was far from the case, the game is so faithful to the original and playing through the game allowed me to remember each section and even prepare for what was ahead given how similar it was. There are changes that you’d expect however, new puzzles and different enemies at different sections which lead to the game feeling nostalgic but also fresh at the same time.

Negatives are hard to come up with for a game of this calibre, though some do come to mind – the knife durability for one really made me not want to upgrade it at all, good in a pinch but using the knife made it more of a cash dump than it really should have been. Equally the ‘new’ weapons didn’t feel great – the bolt thrower for example was a good premise with the attachable mines and recoverable ammunition but fell short in practice as it was very tough to aim and quite expensive.

Overall I really enjoyed myself, the boss mechanics were almost all completely remade and I particularly enjoyed Ramon not being as stationary as the original. Would totally recommend this game to any Resident Evil fan (who obviously didn’t enjoy 5 or 6), mentioning the future I would really really hope they don’t remake the bad games 5 or 6 as they need to die a death.
