Dishonored 2

Just completing Dishonored and the respective DLC's I was hyped to play the next instalment of the franchise Dishonored 2. Expectations were riding high, I was hoping for more passive/non-lethal powers and new ways of taking enemies out without killing them. Most of all however I was looking forward to an advancement in the story that made it worthy of the 2 in it's name. The game didn't disappoint me completely, starting out the story felt a lot different and the graphical upgrade to the engine was very impressive! the game is so pretty after playing the first one I was in awe. The powers were a lot more developed each with individual options you can customise to how you want to play the game. Somewhat further into the game almost 2/3rds in they introduced a completely new mechanic which really took me by surprised however the game didn't seem to use it for very long which really was unfortunate. Equally as you progress through the game the story matched almost exactly the story from one of the DLC The Knife of Dunwall. Overall the game was good but not great, there were no real improvements on the powers that... Read More

Dishonored

Had this game in my backlog for a good while, combining action and stealth with some immersive steam punk like aspects I really was only too happy to give this some time. Dishonored, which to me seemed to be spelt incorrectly (Dishonoured?) gives the player something that I've rarely encountered - freedom of choice. Each encounter or mission can be played several different ways and with various outcomes. Decided at the start of my playthrough that I was going to be the "good guy" resulting in low chaos and a more desirable outcome, I took it upon myself to get every non-lethal way of achieving Corvo's goals. The game has aged somewhat however and it did end up showing some of that during my playthrough of the DLC, after you'd got into the rhythm of taking guards down with various methods there wasn't much in the way of variety and did get slightly stale. This accompanied with the AI of the guards/enemies not really being that intelligent - for example, sometimes staring a guard directly in the face won't get you an alert…meant the game did have a few downsides. Equally I thought the powers they offer the player only... Read More

The Forgotten City

After hurting my thumb recently my friend gifted me this game as it wasn't as action packed so shouldn't require much in the way of dexterity. Going in I didn't really know what to expect, didn't really ever hear about this game and for some reason always getting it confused with the Sinking City (a cuthulian adventure). This game had absolutely nothing to do with anything Cuthlian and really did suprise me. For anyone thinking about playing the game, I'll refrain from spoiling anything in this review since I feel more people should really give it a go. The game is dialogue based which means most of the time you'll be spending talking to people to discover more about what's going on. Not to say that's all of the gameplay mechanics you'll be facing but without spoiling anything I cannot elaborate. The game's story is where it really does shine, thrust into an ancient Roman city it's up to you to decide the fate of it's inhabitants. The game sort of straddles a rogue-lite element with some time travel being involved however has some mechanics that makes this element nonabrasive. The game really comes into it's own with the attention... Read More
